Family photo albums often hold decades-old prints that have picked up scratches, dust specks, yellowing, faded contrast, and film grain over the years. Professional photo restoration studios charge per photo and can take days to return results, and most online "AI restoration" tools require uploading your family pictures to an unknown server. This tool takes a different approach: every adjustment — scratch removal, noise reduction, fade correction, and sharpening — runs directly in your browser using canvas-based image processing. Your photo is read from your device, processed on your device, and downloaded back to your device. Nothing is transmitted anywhere, which matters for photos that are often irreplaceable and personal.
Scratches and dust spots usually appear as small, isolated bright or dark pixels that stand out from their surroundings. The scratch removal slider applies a median-filter-style pass that identifies these outlier pixels and blends them with neighboring pixel values, smoothing out specks without blurring the whole image. Noise reduction works similarly but targets finer grain across larger areas, common in old film scans. Fade correction analyzes the photo's brightness histogram and stretches contrast back out, restoring the darks and lights that decades of light exposure or poor storage have washed out. Sharpening then uses a convolution kernel to bring back edge definition that noise reduction or the original camera softened. Because each effect is a separate slider, you control exactly how much of each repair to apply and can compare the result against the original using the before/after slider at any point.
For heavily scratched black-and-white prints, start with a moderate scratch removal setting around 4–5 rather than the maximum — pushing it too far can soften facial detail along with the scratches. For grainy sepia or faded color photos, noise reduction and fade correction usually do more work than sharpening; apply sharpening last and only lightly, since sharpening old grain can make remaining speckles more visible instead of less. If a photo has large torn or missing sections rather than fine scratches, this tool won't be able to reconstruct missing content — it's built for repairing damage that's still present in the pixels, not recreating parts of the photo that are physically gone.
